The Cyber Crime Police in Bangalore arrested a hacker who had allegedly accessed internet banking accounts of several customers and siphoned of lakhs of rupees.  The hacker used a key logging software to get username and passwords of customers from the computers that they used in cybercafes.

The hacker along with  his accomplices used to steal the data from cybercafes during the first week of the month when most victims used to access their online banking accounts to checjk their accounts as well as to transfer funds.  The accused used a commonly available keylogger software to capture the personal data of the victims.  The accomplices of the acuused used to approach cellphone holders in Karnataka, Kerala and Mumbai offering them currency recharge at huge discounts.  The accused then used to transfer the amount from the compromised accounts.

The racket came to light when one of the victims, a senior manager with an IT company gave  acomplaint to the cyber crime police that omeone had hacked into his Citibank account and defrauded him of Rs. 1.27 lakh through three transactions made towards cellphone currency recharging.  The police tracked down the cyber cafe from which the transaction was made using the IP number of the computer used.
